Overview
While the total number of classroom teachers in Missouri has remained relatively steady since 2015, the makeup of that workforce has changed significantly. Missouri is seeing growth at both ends of the pipeline: more novice teachers entering classrooms and more veteran teachers nearing retirement.
At the same time, the middle of the workforce — teachers in the 7 to 15 year range — is shrinking. These educators often serve as mentors, instructional leaders, and the foundation of school stability. Their decline signals a structural shift in the educator pipeline that has implications for retention, instructional continuity, and long-term school improvement.
Key Findings
- Missouri’s teacher workforce is becoming more polarized. Growth in novice teachers and late-career educators is reshaping the overall experience distribution.
- The mid-career “core” is shrinking. Teachers with 7 to 15 years of experience declined from 36% of the workforce in 2015 to 31% in 2024.
- Retention — not recruitment — is the central challenge. Missouri continues to bring new teachers into the classroom, but first-year retention has fallen to a decade low of 76%.
Why It Matters
Teachers in their mid-career years play a critical role in supporting new educators, maintaining instructional consistency, and helping schools implement new policies effectively. As this group shrinks and the number of retirement-eligible teachers grows, Missouri’s educator workforce becomes more fragile.
Without stronger retention across early and mid-career stages, the state risks increased turnover, reduced instructional stability, and greater difficulty sustaining long-term improvement efforts in schools.
